SPS staff kicks off a new school year at Great Southern Bank Arena

Springfield Public Schools started off the 2025-2026 school year in style at the 2025 Back to School Kickoff. Held at the Great Southern Bank Arena, this event brought together more than 3,500 members of Team SPS, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose in preparation for students coming back to classrooms next week.

The event started with a spirited performance by students from all five SPS high school bands. Throughout the program, various speakers took the stage to inspire and motivate the staff. Missouri State University President Dr. Richard B. Williams and Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag spoke about the impact they’ve seen their loved ones in education make. Judy Brunner, President of the Board of Education, encouraged teachers that the Board of Education is ready and willing to help teachers and support staff make this a great year. There was also a special appearance from Care To Learn Founder Doug Pitt, who shared why he started the organization and how they continue to help students in SPS and all across Missouri.

SPS Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan delivered an update that reflected on the successes of the 2024-2025 school year and outlined the goals for the year ahead. She praised the district's achievements, including a record 97.4% graduation rate. Dr. Lathan also praised the success of programs and initiatives like Read to Succeed, Fly SPS, The Alliance for Healthcare Education and WherestheBus.

Teacher of the Year Danielle O'Neil led the crowd in a movement orchestra activity that got people on their feet and dancing. O'Neill shared the exercise as one all teachers can use in their classrooms to reinvigorate their students. She also encouraged everyone to make sure they are including mental health when taking care of oneself.

Plus, Future Ready Schools’s Director of Education Thomas C. Murray shared a keynote speech that encouraged staff to focus on the person in each of their students and peers.

Overall, the 2025 Back to School Kickoff reminded everyone that SPS is the District of Choice and highlighted why each and every person in attendance chooses SPS. Though the entire room was full of spirit and excitement for the new year, ultimately Jefferies Elementary took home the Spirit Award for the day! The staff's sweet bubblegum look reminded everyone that they "chews" SPS.
